Stay Cool in Hot Temperatures with These Must-Follow Tips

Hot weather is a sure thing in Texas. For many months out of the year, our part of the country sustains very high temperatures, scorching hot sun rays, and, in certain regions, desert-like conditions. Though we may be accustomed to hot weather, it’s important not to underestimate the heat, which leads to thousands of deaths per year – many of which could have been preventable. It’s crucial that you learn how to protect yourself from the heat, in order to avoid heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Here are a few tips you should always follow.

First, you should try to avoid the heat if you can, especially during and around high noon, when the sun’s rays are strongest. When you’re outside, try to stay out of the sun as much as possible. Take frequent breaks in air-conditioned areas whenever you get the chance.

While you’re outside, be sure to drink a lot of water. Staying hydrated is key. Skip soda and alcohol, which have dehydrating effects, and start drinking water before you feel thirsty. This ensures that you’ll ward off dehydration before it begins. Sports drinks with electrolytes are a good option, too, but drink them in moderation because of their sugar content.

Another thing to be mindful of is your outdoor attire. Dress properly for hot weather, and you might be surprised at how much more comfortable you feel outdoors. Reach for light-colored, loose-fitting clothing, which can make a big difference in your ability to cool down.

Don’t forget to also be aware of the people who may need extra care during these hot months. Babies, toddlers, and the elderly are most at risk for heat-related illnesses. So are people with chronic conditions, like heart disease or obesity. If you know anyone living without adequate air conditioning, check in on them during extra-hot days or heat waves. Being mindful may help you save a life!
